About the Design

On August 27, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. federal government to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.”

Our response celebrates the history and identity of Lake Ontario, with a gentle reminder that the Great Lakes need no help being made “great again.”

At the heart of the artwork is a simple piece of wordplay: Lake Ontario already has a proper name, and it is the proper name. That is why the design identifies it as “noun • proper name,” borrowing the visual language of a dictionary entry.

Traditional cartography brings the story together. The familiar shoreline, compass rose and surrounding landmarks establish a clear sense of place, while the dictionary-style typography presents the name as something to be understood, respected and remembered.

The result reads as both a map and a definition: Lake Ontario. Original. Authentic. Unadulterated.

Making a statement in the US! :)

After the recent antics of the US president, I wanted to support Canada and make a statement here. Each time i wear my Lake Ontario hoodie, I get a quiet and casual comment, "I like your hoodie"!

And as importantly, its super comfy, fits great - I ordered size large for a slightly oversize fit, and soft inside. The design is subtle, yet impactful.

The only bad part, was i got hit with a $60 tariff when it arrived. :(
