About the Design

On August 27, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. federal government to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.”

Our response celebrates the history and identity of Lake Ontario, with a gentle reminder that the Great Lakes need no help being made “great again.”

At the heart of the artwork is a simple piece of wordplay: Lake Ontario already has a proper name, and it is the proper name. That is why the design identifies it as “noun • proper name,” borrowing the visual language of a dictionary entry.

Traditional cartography brings the story together. The familiar shoreline, compass rose and surrounding landmarks establish a clear sense of place, while the dictionary-style typography presents the name as something to be understood, respected and remembered.

The result reads as both a map and a definition: Lake Ontario. Original. Authentic. Unadulterated.

I love my Lake Ontario T-shirt! The meassage is great, but the organic cotton is so soft! I washed the shirts, and they washed and dried beautifully. I had ordered one for myself and one for my husband, but size Medium was tight across the upperchest/shoulders for him (all those workouts!), so I ordered him a size Large. (It's on its way.) Today a young man at the checkout commented that his mom would love my shirt. He said she was vorn in Ontario, and the name change radicalized her. I said, well, I'm from New York, and you don't mess with the names of our lakes! Thank you for a great product that makes people smile (and think!) and for the discounts, too. ❤️
